The aim of this course is to complement the foundational approach to drawing with a conceptual understanding of the anatomy and structure of the figure. Each session will consist of individual critiques and an analysis of the primary bones and muscles of a specific part of the body. The focus of the class will be on simplifying and memorizing shapes, forms, proportions, and important anatomical landmarks. Outside of class students are encouraged to put this information into practice by completing two projects spanning the duration of the course. Working in the tradition of the écorché, or “flayed figure”, and using Bargue figure drawings as a template, students will complete two elaborate studies, each consisting of two figures in anterior and posterior views and accompanied by supplemental notes and sketches. The first project will focus on the skeleton as the structural framework of the figure, while the second will investigate the surface musculature and design of the figure.
Students are encouraged to spend a minimum of 4 hours outside of class developing their drawings for individual critiques.
Note: No class on October 8 or November 26
